Horizon7 on VMware Cloud on AWS delivers simple, secure and scalable solution for desktops and application virtualization. We can easily extend desktop services on cloud to address more use cases such as expansion of existing on-prem Horizon, Disaster Recovery (DR) and seasonal scalability without investing on CapEx.
VMware manages the upgrade and maintenance of VMware cloud on AWS (VMC) underlaying hardware and software including vSphere, vCenter and NSX with minimal downtime. It hugely reduces the burden of cost, time and requirement of technical capabilities so that customer will have enough resource to focus on managing Horizon 7 stack running on top of VMC and packaging of desktops & applications.

Here are some deployment use cases of Horizon on VMC
Deployment Use Case#1:
The customer who wants to start the Horizon on VMC deployment with small scale without any connectivity between on-premises datacenter and VMC SDDC.
- Users can access the virtual desktops/apps from public internet only.
- Horizon service component like Active directory/DNS/DHC, Database server for horizon event, users’ profile server and file server etc. need to be hosted within VMware cloud on AWS SDDC.
- Desktop internet traffic route to public internet from VMC internet gateway (IGW).
Deployment Use Case#2:
The customer who already has horizon environment on on-premises datacenter and looking for expansion of further Virtual desktops/apps workload to cloud or looking for the disaster recovery (DR) site on cloud can get the benefit from Horizon on VMC.
- Customer on-premises datacenter and VMC SDDC are connected with internet VPN or dedicated Direct Connect link.
- Existing AD/DNS hosted on-premises can be leveraged for Horizon on VMC deployment however VMware recommends to host the AD/DNS within VMC SDDC.
- Internal users connect to Horizon on VMC desktop/apps via VPN/Direct Connect link, external user connect via public internet.
- Depending upon customer requirement, desktops internet traffic default gateway can be faced either to on-premises datacenter or allow directly go out from VMC SDDC. By default desktops internet traffic routes to internet via VMC SDDC internet gateway.
- App Volumes and User Environment Management servers are hosted within VMC SDDC.
- Customer can configure the CPA between on-premises horizon and horizon on VMC.
Deployment Use Case#3:
As of May 2019, there is a limitation that single VMC SDDC can support upto 2000 concurrent users’ sessions (number may be vary depending upon customer use case). So if concurrent number of users’ sessions is bigger than 2000, customer will have option to go with multiple SDDCs deployment.
